Almost 80 golfers endured a wet and challenging day at Carrbridge Golf Club where the Tomatin Distillery Scottish Nine Hole Open was held for a second year.
Pin positions were set to test the field of golfers from across the UK as Head Greenkeeper Michael Mann, who had set the course up in great condition, was an early leader in the scratch competition with a 41.
He was soon overtaken as scores started to drop while the rain eased towards the middle of the day and the lead was shared by David McIntosh and Richard Selvester on 36. Andy Murray (adjusted 6) held the handicap lead going into the afternoon on 33, with the 2011 handicap winner Martin Hendry back in the pack.
As the day progressed and the wet weather maintained its persistence, the final group of 20 players, including the 2011 Scratch winner Laurie Chancellor, knew what scores were required to secure victory as they teed off into the early evening.
Competition was fierce as players sought to win the great prizes on offer.In the gathering dusk, and as the final putts were sunk, close results in both scratch and handicap competitions unfolded.
Laurie Chancellor of Inverness retained his title and a voucher for £200 with a scratch score of 35, as last year, just edging out Gordon Hay on 36 for £150 in second place with a better inward half from Richard Selvester of Kingussie, who picked up £100.
David McIntosh just missed out on the prizes with a 36 for 4th place on count-back, with John Campbell on 37 in front of Graeme Anderson and Hugh Parker on 38. The Handicap section was also closely contested but Andy Murray (6) 33 secured victory and a voucher for £100 from Les Dickson (9) on 34 for £75 with a better inward half from Thomas Watson (5) of Lochcarron in third for £50, just edging out Hugh Parker (4) also on 34.
Other leading handicap scores; Bob Coupar (6), John Dawson (7), Tom Loynes (7) and Ian Scott (7) on 35. Alan Ross (8.5), Scott Bain (3.5), Sandy Rose (4.5) and Richard Hughes (9.5) on 35.5 A bottle of 18 year old Tomatin Whisky was collected by David Whalley with his tee shot at the 8th, finishing just 57cm from the pin. All eyes now switch to the competition’s big brother at Castle Stuart where an improvement in weather and underfoot conditions will be welcomed by players and spectators alike.

This competition can only go from strength to strength with bigger prizes and over the coming years Carrbridge Golf Club will build on this year's experience to make it an even more enjoyable experience for visitors to the area.
The Scottish Open is again being held at Castle Stuart in 2013 and Carrbridge Golf Club will host the next "Tomatin Distillery Scottish Nine Hole Open" to coincide with that event.
